What is the Academy?
The Early Career Faculty Academy is a learning community designed specifically for a cohort of first-year, tenure-track assistant professors who, with the encouragement of their DEOs, make a commitment to participate. The cohort explores various aspects of teaching and provides one another with support, accountability, and feedback in preparation for the third-year review.
The Academy aims to help early-career, tenure-track faculty:
- balance teaching with research and other obligations,
- employ effective and rewarding teaching pedagogies,
- network with other faculty members, and
- develop their teaching portfolios and prepare for the third-year review.
Professional Development
A series of workshops on topics including course design, assessment, and teaching portfolio development.
Networking events with other early-career, tenure-track faculty members and with tenured faculty mentors.
Center for Teaching staff members offer one-on-one consultation on any topic related to teaching and learning and can assist with observations, gathering midterm student feedback, and more.
Student Instructional Technology Assistants (SITAs) provide personalized support for the implementation of teaching technologies. SITAs are available to help each Academy member leverage teaching technologies (such as ICON) to support efficient, effective teaching.
Each Academy cohort serves as a community whose members provide one another with support, accountability, and feedback.
Participating in the Academy
First-year, tenure-track assistant professors will receive an invitation before the start of each academic year to join the Academy and attend a kickoff luncheon at the beginning of the fall term.
Prospective tenure-track faculty members are invited to meet with the Academy director at any time to discuss future participation in the Academy as well as other support available through the Center for Teaching.
