Gain valuable work experience, earn money, and develop communication and leadership skills while playing an important role in how courses are designed and taught.
The University of Iowa Students as Partners program is looking to hire several undergraduate students in fall 2024. This exciting pilot program brings student voices directly into course design, helping transform courses at Iowa into more active, engaging learning environments for all Hawkeyes.
Students interested in learning more about this unique professional development opportunity should fill out this form or contact the Center for Teaching at teaching@uiowa.edu.
Student partners must be available to attend staff meetings from 5 to 6 p.m. every Tuesday throughout the semester.
What is a student partner?
Student consultants in the Students as Partners program work with an instructor to enhance the teaching and learning experience in a course. As a student consultant, you will:
- With training and support from the Center for Teaching, observe class sessions and provide feedback to the instructor
- Meet regularly with the instructor to discuss teaching methods, course enhancements, and the overall student experience
- Participate in community sessions with other student and faculty partners to share updates, exchange ideas, and explore professional development opportunities
Why should you become a student partner?
Becoming a student pedagogical partner is a great opportunity for you to:
- Have a positive impact on your courses and your peers
- Develop your communication, critical thinking, and leadership skills
- Build connections while gaining deeper insights into course design and instructional approaches
- Earn $14 per hour for 4-6 hours per week
What do previous student partners say?
“…the professors are engaged and value student opinions and thoughts…”
“Professors are people too. They have their own lives, and their own stressors. Being kind and helpful towards them goes a long way.”
“The most positive aspect of this partnership thus far is seeing the outside perspective of how a class is planned and presented.“
“One of the most beneficial aspects of this partnership has been the collaboration with the professor and opportunity to share my own experience as a student to help them understand the possible challenges faced by their students.”
“I have found it helpful to attend multiple lecture and discussion classes to get to know the student population and look at the course from the point of view of someone taking the class. It has not only allowed me to understand challenges but also what we can implement to help overcome them.”
